Taking Your Design Back to Basics

Have you noticed that trends have become more complicated instead of simpler these days? From decor ideas to fashion, there’s something crazy going on everywhere you turn to. Just when it seems like we have seen it all, we get surprised. Design is not the exception.

With the huge number of trends going on out there you can feel confused about the direction you want to take your brand to. Should you follow what everyone else is doing and the “it” trend? Or go with a classic style?

When it comes to having a logo design, a full branding and even your website my advice is this: less is more. This doesn’t mean that you just pick the first font you see or blog template and call it the day. It’s all about knowing where to stop and be 100% intentional with each element you add.

Taking Your Design Back to Basics

Take your blog design for example. There are many sites out there that include every element they can get on their sidebar. This can cause your audience to get distracted and may not be as visually appealing.

In my experience, the brands that truly shine through are the ones that let their content speak for itself and use visual elements as a support, instead of a competition.

That’s one of the main reasons why it’s a good idea to work with a professional when you are thinking about branding or web design. They can help you bring together those elements that work in harmony and are not overwhelming.

Are you ready to take your design back to basics? Whether we are talking about your logo or web design, here are 5 steps you can follow to make sure you get the most out of your visual identity.

1. Have a clear understanding of your brand

The first thing that can make you want to try every single style and trend is not having a clear understanding of your brand.

This is a big part if a branding process, which goes beyond just the creation of the visual elements. Take time to evaluate your purpose, target market, values and those details that compose your brand.

2. Take a step back

I’m in favor of experimenting and trying new styles. This can help you finally reach that design you have always wanted and define what you like and what you don’t.

But this has to be done with intention and careful planning, not just because you follow the trend of the moment. Whenever you feel like going through a rebranding or website makeover, take a moment to evaluate your options and make sure it’s the right step to take.

3. Don’t be afraid of the neutrals

A neutral color palette is my personal favorite these days. It can be a complete game changer as it allows you to have a clean canvas to add your content to and even accentuate it with hints of color when you feel like it.

Don’t complicate your palette and choose those colors that you know you will like for a long time.

4. Follow your own style

It can be scary to stay away from popular trends. But if something just doesn’t fit your brand, then don’t go with it just because everyone out there is doing the same thing.

Define your own style and don’t be scared to stick to it even if it’s different to what people are used to.

5. Don’t overthink it

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found myself thinking too much about a logo design or website when the answer was right in front of me. Focusing on what everyone else is doing is the easiest way to lose your creativity and personal style.

A great design doesn’t have to include tons of details to make it stand out, it just needs to represent your brand and communicate your message. Don’t overthink it and just let your talent shine through!
