Pinterest is one of the most popular platforms for bloggers and business owners. This comes as no surprise since you can find there everyday inspiration, home decor, recipes, blogging and business tips…basically everything about anything.
It’s also a great place to promote your website’s content, such as blog posts, services, and products. If you are looking to grow your brand while using Pinterest, then it’s a must to have the proper tools on your site to make it easier for your readers to share the content they like.
This can be achieved with different plugins, such as Jetpack and Social Warfare, which allow displaying sharing icons on each post. But you can’t forget about a Pinterest pin it button. This can appear when a user hovers over an image on your site, so that they only have to click on it and share almost instantly.
How can you add one? In this post, I will walk you through the steps you need to follow to install and customize a Pinterest pin it button to your WordPress site.
1. Install the Plugin
The first step is to install the jQuery Pin It Button for Images plugin (that’s a long title!). To do this, go to Plugins > Add New and search for the name of the plugin, install it and activate it.
As always, check first if your WordPress installation is updated to the latest version to avoid any crashes.
2. Set Up
Once you have installed and activated it, go back to the plugins page and click on the Settings link right under it. You will see a page where you can select different options, such as where this button should appear.
The only section I recommend changing is the Disable and Shown options. If you want to hide this image from specific pages and categories, you can do so here by just deleting or adding the codes necessary.
3. Create a custom button
The default button is the classic Pinterest button, but to make sure this has the same design as your website, you can easily create your own. For this, you need to design your own button. You can do this using Canva, Photoshop or Illustrator.
Create an image size that is double the size of the final result. For example, on this website the Pinterest pin it button image I uploaded was 130px width and 70px height. When I entered the size on the plugin page I set it as 65px width and 35px height. This way it remains as a high-resolution file on every device.
You can choose any background, iconography, and font you want for this design like this example below.
PS. This one is included in the resource library for free!
4. Upload your design
Next, go to the Visual section where you can upload your own Pinterest pin it button. Scroll down to where it says Pin Image, this is where you can customize the main image.
Click on Upload an image using media library and upload your new button. Enter the height and width as well, remember that it will be half the size you created. Save the changes and you are done!
